Portfolio Project Genre #2

For my upcoming portfolio project, another genre I am definitely considering is the Drama genre.

The genre Drama is if not the most well known genre in film history. It's a performance that involves conflict and the portrayal of human experiences. It most of the time presents a situation that will keep the audience engaged while making them feel empathetic or excited, etc. This genre heavily relies on development throughout the film, whether that be character development or story development.

Typical Target Audience

The typical target audience for this particular genre can range from both females and males of the ages 18-29, but mostly females. This tends to aim towards millennials, even though Gen-Z does dabble in this genre quite a lot. For the psychographics aspect of it all, the target audience reaches lots of empathy seekers or problem solvers. It also ranges with an audience who tend to have a higher income. People who aim more towards drama are also avid TV watchers, their viewing habits tend to go more towards premium streaming services like Apple TV+.

Genre Conventions with Content

A lot of the mise-en-scene presented in these types of films have a huge part with the story arc. The lightning, framing, and setting, all play into effect to provide the viewer with a dramatic and felt reality. The common themes and tropes all want to feel like universal human experiences for the viewers. The main character is usually portrayed as an everyday man with everyday flaws like a regular human being.

Genre Conventions with Technique

To deeper dive into the lighting, framing, and setting of it all, these techniques are used to show internal weather. These techniques can convey feelings of realism or contrasts. Often using high and low angles can truly represent how the character must feel in the moment of the scene. The editing can also be used as sort of a rhythm to establish a flow in the film. Sound also plays a huge part in that too of establishing the character's inner voice or inner monologue.

Institutional Conventions

The narrative and emotional structure typically used to develop am arc within the character and within the film. For the more business aspect of the genre, there a lots of film festivals to really sell certain films. Another big marketing tactic is the window for when the movie is released. During "awards season" films will intentionally drop to keep the film fresh in the minds of academy critics.
